From Pranayam to Laughter: A.S.H.A.’s healing path for dementia patients
By Saloni Singh
“They have forgotten but don’t forget them,” is what Ms. Jasmine Sinha, CEO of Hope Ek A.S.H.A. (Affectionate Secured Homes for Alzheimer’s) tells the families of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients.
Ms. Sinha, who was speaking to this reporter at the ELDERCARE fair at the Expo Centre, Greater Noida, where A.S.H.A. had set up a stall, said, “Our vision is to establish a ‘dementia village’ for Alzheimer’s disease patients around Delhi NCR, where their spouses will also be involved so that both can stay near each other at this age/stage.”
Currently, A.S.H.A. offers specialized care to patients who are battling this disease. They are given brain-stimulating exercises, physiotherapy, specially designed activities, and, most importantly, personal care.
The activities include physical activities, such as standing and sitting exercises, Pranayam, Laughter Therapy, Reminiscence Therapy, Memory Stimulating Activities, Sensory and Motor Skill Activities, Spiritual Songs and Hymns, Recitation of mantras, and group singing.
These activities and specialized care are given by trained professionals. The caregivers at A.S.H.A. are young individuals from economically weaker segments of society who are trained in elder care and Alzheimer’s care.
This training helps the caregivers secure a stable livelihood. A.S.H.A. also conducts regular meetings, social interactions, and seminars as an attempt to support caregivers. These services are also available online through a “Caregivers’ Forum.”
This digital platform allows caregivers to share experiences, ask questions, and seek guidance. The forum also includes panel doctors who can address medical queries promptly and accurately.
The cost of specialized dementia care in Delhi NCR ranges from ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 per month, with premium setups exceeding ₹1 lakh. While A.S.H.A. does not publish specific pricing, the fees depends largely on the condition and the duration of the treatment.
The caregiver-resident ratio at A.S.H.A is 1:2, depending on the level of care.
A.S.H.A. follows an open-door policy, and families can visit their loved ones as and when they wish. However, prior confirmation is required. Also, they do not encourage visitors during meal hours and activity timings.
Her advice to a family dealing with a dementia diagnosis is, “Be their support instead of making them feel unattended and disregarded.”
